Midweek: a finish, basket BOM, and more batiks from With Strings Attached

Batik Bars is quilted and bound!

I got the swirly Asian print way back in 2000. I remember that because I stopped at a quilt shop the weekend I went to an out-of-state wedding. I thought it would be good for a jacket. Over the years I'd take it off the shelf and think about using it (though the idea of a jacket was long gone). I just couldn't cut it up  so I used it in its entirety.   (The other green print on the right came from the birthday bash stash. The one at the bottom was ...

Midweek: stash report, handkerchief baskets, and OMG from With Strings Attached

Rabbit, rabbit -- all decked out for Mardi Gras!

I didn't get photos of the wonderful Mardi Gras-themed centerpieces at yesterday's Zion Woman's Club meeting. It was our club's turn for reciprocity when we invite representatives from other clubs in the district to join us.  We had five guests and we welcomed a new member.  The luncheon was lasagna, salad, and bread sticks from the local bakery/caterer, with Mardi Gras-frosted cookies for dessert.

Leftover cookies!
The program was "Family Heirloom Recipes from the Illinois State Fair."   Catherine Lambrecht told us about the 10+ year project where ...

Weekly update: not quite ready for Broadway, the mystery, unexpected baskets, and reading from With Strings Attached

"Lovebirds" (c) Phyllis Cullen
In the past our winter guild meetings often had to be cancelled at the last minute due to severe weather (snow or cold).  We meet at night and members live as far as 25 miles away.    Adding to that the uncertainty of pandemic restrictions, the board decided that the January and February meetings will be by Zoom.  This week though the skies were clear it was quite cold.  Our speaker was art quilter Phyllis Cullen coming to us from tropical Hawaii!  She told us how she creates portrait quilts.

Midweek: Christmas baskets flimsy! from With Strings Attached

Zinnias for Zion is an annual initiative in the community that encourages people to plant zinnias.  They represent beauty in diversity (and hardiness, considering the drought we've had this summer).   This photo was taken at the entrance to the library yesterday.

In the studio:  the Christmas baskets quilt is a flimsy!  I had just enough of the green/red plaid print for the border.  (It's the same print I used for  last year's AAUW Christmas quilt.  There are only scraps left now.)

69 x 69. 6 yards by weight.

The blocks are 8x8 finished. They were rather ...

Midweek: it's a flimsy + basket blocks from With Strings Attached

On Monday we enjoyed revisiting Lyons Woods for the 2021 Hike Lake County Challenge.  Tuesday was too hot and humid to do more than run errands -- 95 temp and heat index of 105.  When I sat out on the shady patio later in the afternoon a front came through with clouds and wind gusts. Quite dramatic!  I came inside before it began to rain.  We got about an inch -- so badly needed.

Rose hips, gray dogwood, a burl.

Joe Pye weed, sawtooth sunflower, evening primrose.   Hedge bindweed, rudbeckia (Black-eyed Susan), field thistle.  Woodland sunflower, whole-leaf rosinweed, another woodland sunflower.

Pine ...

Friday check in: better with a border -- and on to the next project from With Strings Attached

Not only better, but also bigger.  Note that I made a new block to replace the upper left checkerboard so it's more balanced, as well.

I came across Kim Diehl's "All in a Row" pattern as I perused the stack of Civil War-themed quilting books and the file of printouts and magazine patterns.  I printed a picture of All in a Row back in 2014 (the printout is dated). Since then I've acquired two Martingale books that feature it.  I figured that was a sign that it's high time to make my own ...

Monday, Monday from Pinkadot Quilts

So of course now is a great time to start a new project? I should be working on all the UFO's but for right now this is fast and easy. I also found out I do not have many dark fabrics......I wanted this to look different from what I usually do with light, bright, happy colors. Maybe this is a reflection of the times?

This is the state of my sewing room, last week. It looks much more chaotic right now! I am using a lot of big prints that can be hard to work with in a ...

Red and Green Applique from Pinkadot Quilts

I love red and green applique quilts. No matter what that will never change!
I have not done a big applique project in a long time. I am now making one with 9, 30" blocks for my bed. It will also have an applique border, she says with conviction! Let's see if that comes true.

I am using the freezer paper method, mostly because I want the circles and flowers to be exact. If they are not, it will drive me crazy. Usually I am not so worried but for this one I will be.
So I fused 2 ...
